Designer Interview
What made you want to design modern, contemporary art jewellery?
My passion for designing modern, contemporary art jewellery comes from a deep appreciation for both the artistic and the personal aspects of jewellery making. From a young age, I was fascinated by the way jewellery could simultaneously be a form of self-expression and a work of art. My studies in Handmade Jewelry and Jewelry Design Technique further fueled this passion.
I was particularly drawn to the concept of jewellery as more than just an accessory—as a medium through which one's personality and style could be communicated. I wanted to challenge the traditional boundaries of jewellery design and create pieces that were not only beautiful and elegant but also unique and expressive.
The combination of Greece's rich cultural heritage and my interest in modern aesthetics provided a unique foundation for my designs. By blending these elements, I aim to create jewellery that resonates with contemporary sensibilities while paying homage to timeless beauty and craftsmanship. Ultimately, it's about creating wearable art that empowers women to celebrate and manifest their individuality.
"Each piece I design is a tribute to the beauty of simplicity, the elegance of geometry, and the power of femininity, crafted to allow the wearer to make a sophisticated statement about who they are."
When did you know you wanted to become a designer?
My journey toward becoming a designer began in my formative years, but it truly became clear I wanted to pursue jewellery design during my academic studies in handmade jewellery and design techniques. I was captivated by the alchemy of transforming metals and gemstones into intricate, expressive works of art. There was a defining moment when I held a piece I had crafted, feeling its texture, seeing its shine, and realizing that this was more than a piece of jewellery—it was a story, an emotion, a piece of me. This profound connection between creativity, craftsmanship, and expression was a revelation. It was not just about designing; it was about breathing life into ideas, encapsulating moments and emotions, and allowing others to wear these narratives in a way that celebrated their individuality.
What did the beginnings of Georgia Charal look like?
The beginnings of Georgia Charal were humble yet filled with immense passion and determination. I started in a small studio space, where every corner brimmed with ideas, metals, and gemstones. Those early days were a blend of creative exploration and learning the intricacies of the jewellery business. Each piece I created was a step toward defining the brand's identity—a fusion of art, elegance, and Greek heritage.
It was a time of hands-on experimentation, where I honed my skills in silversmithing and design, often working late into the night. The initial collections were a testament to my commitment to quality and uniqueness, laying the groundwork for the brand's future. Building client relationships, showcasing my work in local and international shows, and gradually gaining recognition were all part of this journey. The beginnings were challenging, but every small success was a building block toward the international presence Georgia Charal has today.
Where do you find inspiration?
Inspiration for my designs is drawn from a plethora of sources, reflecting the rich blending of experiences and observations that life offers. Nature's intricate patterns and organic shapes are a constant source of inspiration, revealing an effortless elegance that I strive to encapsulate in my jewellery. The diverse materials themselves often spark creativity. The way light plays on different metals or the unique characteristics of each gemstone can set the foundation for a new design.
Additionally, my Greek heritage plays a significant role. The rich history, art, and culture of Greece offer an endless source of ideas, blending the ancient with the contemporary.
Finally, the concept of simplicity and surreal aesthetics in everyday life inspires me. Observing the world around me, from urban architecture to the subtle details of everyday objects, often ignites a creative spark. These elements combine to inform a style that is not just about adornment but about storytelling and personal expression.
How would you describe the style you aim for the brand?
The style I aim for Georgia Charal is best described as a harmonious blend of contemporary elegance and artistic expression. It's a style that transcends traditional jewellery design, embracing simplicity yet making a sophisticated statement.
At its core, the brand's style is about celebrating individuality and femininity. It's about creating pieces that aren't just accessories but extensions of the wearer's personality. The aim is to offer jewellery that complements a woman's style, allowing her to express her uniqueness and elevate her everyday elegance.
What sets your brand apart from the rest?
What sets Georgia Charal apart is our commitment to creating not just jewellery, but wearable art that embodies a unique blend of artistic innovation, quality craftsmanship, and a deep connection to Greek cultural heritage. Each design is meticulously handcrafted, ensuring a level of detail and quality that mass-produced pieces simply cannot match. Our focus on using fine metal materials of the highest quality adds to the luxury and durability of our creations.
Additionally, the brand's dedication to personal expression and individuality in fashion sets us apart. We strive to create jewellery that complements a woman's style and serves as a statement of her own individuality—pieces that are as unique and special as the individuals who wear them.
What brand values are most important for Georgia Charal?
For Georgia Charal, the most important brand values are craftsmanship, individuality, and authenticity.
First and foremost is craftsmanship. We are dedicated to the art of jewellery making, ensuring that each piece is created with the utmost attention to detail and quality. This involves a meticulous process of designing, selecting materials, and handcrafting, ensuring that every piece meets the highest standards of excellence.
Individuality is also central to our brand. We believe in celebrating the uniqueness of each person, and this belief is reflected in our designs. Our jewellery is made to complement and express the individual style and personality of the wearer, offering a means of personal expression and self-celebration.
Lastly, authenticity is crucial. We strive to be true to our artistic vision and Greek heritage, creating pieces that are genuine and original. This value guides us in our design process and in the way we conduct our business, ensuring that we remain authentic to our brand ethos and to the customers we serve.
What is the one piece of advice you would give to a new designer?
My key advice for a new designer would be to remain true to your own creative vision. Don't be swayed by passing trends or imitate others. Your unique perspective and personal touch are what make your designs stand out. Also, be patient and persistent—building a brand takes time and resilience.
"Keep refining your craft and stay true to your artistic identity."
What was your previous work experience before launching your brand?
Prior to my journey in jewellery design, I had a diverse background that included military service and studies in computer science in Yugoslavia. My time in the military was a formative experience, teaching me discipline, resilience, and the value of hard work and dedication. These qualities have been instrumental in my approach to business and design.
My studies in computer science in Yugoslavia provided a completely different perspective, sharpening my analytical and problem-solving skills. While seemingly unrelated to jewellery design, this background in technology helped me develop a methodical approach to my work and fostered an appreciation for precision and innovation.
Both experiences, although distinct from my current path, have contributed to a well-rounded skill set and a unique approach to the world of jewellery design, allowing me to incorporate diverse influences and techniques into my work at Georgia Charal.
What was the toughest circumstance you overcame when just starting your business?
One of the toughest challenges I faced when starting Georgia Charal was establishing the brand's identity and presence in a competitive market. As a new designer, gaining the trust and attention of customers, especially in the luxury segment, was a significant hurdle. I had to find a balance between staying true to my artistic vision and creating pieces that resonated with potential customers.
Additionally, managing the business aspects—like sourcing materials, marketing, and financial planning—while focusing on the creative process was daunting. I had to quickly learn and adapt to the various facets of running a business, which was a steep learning curve.
If you could go back and tell yourself one thing before beginning your career, what would it be?
If I could go back and give myself one piece of advice before beginning my career, it would be to trust in my own abilities and the unique vision I bring to my designs. I would tell myself to worry less about the uncertainties of the future and focus more on embracing each moment of the creative journey. I'd remind myself to be patient, stay passionate, and remember that every challenge is an opportunity to grow and evolve—both as a designer and as a brand.
Do you have a passion other than fashion or design?
Certainly. Alongside my love for fashion and design, I have a profound passion for traveling. Exploring new cultures, landscapes, and architecture fuels my creativity and broadens my perspective, which often translates into my jewelry designs. I'm also deeply connected to nature and outdoor activities; the beauty and diversity of the natural world inspire many of my pieces. Interior design is another interest of mine, where the harmony and aesthetics of space and décor fascinate me.
What is the most important thing you would like your brand to be recognized for?
The most important thing I want Georgia Charal to be recognized for is creating jewelry that is not just an accessory, but a form of personal expression and art. I aspire for the brand to be synonymous with craftsmanship, uniqueness, and the ability to embody the wearer's individuality and elegance. Each piece is a testament to our commitment to quality, artistic innovation, and the celebration of one's unique style and personality. I hope that when people think of Georgia Charal, they think of jewelry that truly resonates with them on a personal level, enhancing their individual beauty and story.
What should consumers expect to see next from Georgia Charal?
Consumers should expect brand-new collections that are coming up, as well as our presence in more international trade shows. In addition, we are planning to expand our presence both online and in select boutiques, galleries, and museums globally, making our unique pieces more accessible to a wider audience. We're excited about the future and can't wait to share our new creations with our customers and the world.

Sustainability and ethical practices in jewelry making are also a key focus for us moving forward. We want to ensure that our creations are not only beautiful but also responsibly made, respecting both the environment and the people involved in our production process.
Above all, I see Georgia Charal maintaining its core values of craftsmanship, individuality, and authenticity—building a legacy that is not only about exceptional jewelry but also about empowering women to express their unique style and stories through our designs.
