Designer Interview
When did you know you wanted to start your own brand?
About three years ago, it just felt right. There was a clear need for commercializing invasive pufferfish leather, because it is so beautiful, and we had a great opportunity to fill that gap!
Where do you find inspiration?
The overall goal of marine conservation is everything to me. Every project I take on, including my shark conservation work, is dedicated to improving the state of our oceans. I'm proud to say we are making lots of great measurable impacts!
How do you combine your passion for marine conservation with fashion?
Our brand tells a new story of marine solutions that improve the seas while adding a new type of eco-friendly leather to the fashion industry. This is about slow fashion, investing in quality natural products that are all handcrafted and timeless. Our collection reflects the sea, even with some marine-inspired designs like our signature wave cardholders or purses shaped like sea creatures--fish, jellyfish, pufferfish, and sharks.
What sets your brand apart from the rest?
Our products are one-of-a-kind, where we accentuate the natural spots and stripes patterns from the fish leather. We are the only brand in the world offering eco-positive invasive pufferfish leather products. We control the whole process, from ethically sourcing the fish, the innovative tanning, to the European standards quality testing. Our project also excels in the benefits it generates- from controlling the worst marine invasive menace in our seas, rebuilding marine biodiversity to support coastal communities, and improving the lives of coastal communities, every step in our process is positive. When you own one of our pieces, you become part of that change.

What brand values are most important for Le Puffer?
At Le Puffer, we champion slow fashion-prioritizing quality, sustainability, and mindful consumption. It's about creating timeless, durable products that stand the test of time while turning challenges into innovative solutions. With Le Puffer, you invest in craftsmanship and conservation, reducing waste and embracing a future where every piece matters. Buy once, cherish forever.
What led you to enter the leather industry?
As a fisheries scientist and pufferfish expert, we know that the best way to manage invasive species is to commercialize them. Since pufferfish are highly toxic and can't be eaten, why not transform them into stunning luxury leather? It's a natural, win-win solution that's as beautiful as it is practical.
What was the toughest challenge you faced when starting your business?
Transitioning from a background in science and scuba diving to exploring the world of business marketing, and storytelling was like entering uncharted waters. While learning these new skills has been a challenge, it's also been an exhilarating journey of growth and creativity. Our story is our best part, and we're excited to share it with the world.
What does sustainability look like for Le Puffer?
We don't just do sustainability-we contribute to eco-positivity. While sustainability is about maintaining balance, we're about making waves of positive impacts. The entire process-from reducing invasive species to supporting local communities -makes the marine environment healthier and better for our coastal communities.

If you could go back and tell yourself one thing before starting your career, what would it be?
Keep chasing your passion -it will fuel everything you do. You don't need to know it all; just find smart, inspiring people to collaborate with. Together, you'll build something incredible that you couldn't create alone.
What was your previous work experience before launching Le Puffer?
I started out as one of the youngest female scuba instructors back in 1998, diving all over the globe-Australia, Thailand, Turkey, Honduras, Mexico, and Belize. In Vancouver, I juggled being a whale-watching guide, invertebrate specialist, and salmon researcher while tackling university courses and bartending on the side. These days, I still dive into marine science on the side-it's part of who I am, and probably always will be.
What advice would you give someone just starting their own brand?
The competition is fierce, but quality is the secret weapon -it determines your value and earns you loyalty. Focus on trust and craft something that doesn't just look good but does good. Create a product that stands out for its beauty and positive impact on the world, and your customers will keep coming back for more.
What do you want Le Puffer to be recognized for?
Le Puffer should be recognized for our innovation. We are the only ones in this space, both managing the fishery and creating timeless products from this new exotic leather. I want Le Puffer to set the standard for a best practices scenario for turning an invasive species problem into a win for the environment and fishers. With sleek, minimalist designs that radiate cool, conscious style. It's about blending innovation and elegance into something truly unique.
What should consumers expect next from Le Puffer?
Shoes! We're working on prototypes right now and can't wait to get your input on which models to produce. We're also dreaming big this year- think pufferfish leather bralettes. We're on the hunt for a visionary women's fashion designer to bring new bold ideas to life.
