Designer Interview
What inspired you to name your brand?
We wanted to make the name self-explanatory and very evocative and also general enough because even though we are focusing on shoes, who knows how the brand will grow!
So, the name Handmade actually represents the spirit of how we do things in our workshops, so whatever we do, it's handmade. What we like best about our brand is our logo, which is the certificate of authenticity, and every product has it stamped.
What made you want to design shoes?
We believe that shoes are probably the most important part of an outfit because they directly affect how the person wearing the shoes feels. It's also an element of fashion for which people set no price limitation when shopping, and we consider it an investment in quality. Handmade shoes can become somewhat costly, but the craftsmanship behind the work makes the price and shoe worth it.
Where do you find inspiration?
The inspiration comes from the traditional designs from Spain, mostly Cataluña. The espadrilles can be different depending on the region, so what we are doing is creating designs inspired by each region. It's not just a shoe; it's a cultural experience when wearing a Handmade shoe!

How would you describe the style of your brand?
The style of the brand is clear: traditional, colorful, and fun!
When was your first industry experience and how did it impact you?
My first industry experience was in China since I studied there, and it was a negative impact. What I learned is how much I disliked the big factory production and low-quality products. I was inspired to do the exact opposite.
What did the beginnings of Handmade Barcelona look like?
I started with the brand in 2013, mostly in little markets, university trunk shows, and finally opened a shop. Yet it took a turn for the worse when the store was mugged. But we survived because we launched a Kickstarter campaign that not only helped us get back on our feet but also went viral! It was the start of our fame and success.
What brand values are most important for Handmade Barcelona?
We bring value by selling an experience, not only shoes. Our stores are not only for selling; there are activities people can do. People love coming to our shops in Barcelona because they go home not only with amazing shoes but also cultured and entertained. We have become one of the best-recommended fun and colorful activities to do in Barcelona.

How does sustainability play a role in your brand? What sustainable measures has Handmade Barcelona taken to better the environment?
Luckily, our espadrilles are sustainable and eco-friendly, made from cotton and plant-based materials. Their materials are processed by hand, providing jobs for craftsmen.
What was the toughest circumstance you overcame when starting your business?
The toughest circumstance was the time the store was mugged. For two months, we did not have any sales and had to go out and sell straight off the street and fairs. We bounced back with the Kickstarter campaign and became famous. Forbes even mentioned our story in their magazine!
How has the fashion industry changed since you first started out?
Since we started 10 years ago, we have seen that we were pioneers in the world of custom-made espadrilles, but now other brands have adopted a similar concept. Although competitively speaking, it makes us want to seek out new and better ways to improve our brand. Also, it's not only about selling products; the industry has shifted to selling experiences.
What is one piece of advice you would give to a new designer?
To upcoming designers, firstly, I would advise them to love what they are doing, because when times get tough, motivation comes from within to dedicate the time and effort it requires to build a brand. Pursue your idea as if you already failed but are acting out of fun and find interest in whatever it is that you do.
What sets your brand apart from the rest?
Our brand is not just a store that sells a product; it's an experience in shopping.
What has been your biggest accomplishment to date?
Our best accomplishments are seeing how happy people are after coming to our stores, learning, experiencing the shopping process, and taking home an excellent product they will cherish forever.
What do you envision for the future of Handmade Barcelona?
The future of Handmade is already here. We are expanding and replicating the concept in different cities. By blending with specific cultures and offering experiences that mix their traditions with our art of shoemaking, we can create iconic stores and unique shopping experiences.
What is the most important thing you would like your brand to be recognized for?
I think the main thing I want people to remember about the Handmade brand is that it is fun.
What should customers expect to see next from Handmade Barcelona?
The next thing for Handmade is to open in Mexico and Colombia, building experiences for people to enjoy as a main attraction for tourists.
